Chapter Fourteen
Honest Negotiations
The Unseelie Fae regarded Quinn with unveiled appreciation. âAlone at last, pretty one.â She gestured toward the cuffs. âNow be a good little mortal and put those on.â
A month agoâhell, a fortnight ago, Quinn would have seduced the creature in exchange for his freedom and chalked it up to an interesting interlude. But being near Constance again had reminded him of the things heâd used to want, and this Fae left him cold. At the same time, he was acutely aware that the Unseelie had used Constance against him once, and he would have to be very careful not to let that happen againânor would he leave her to Alexâs tender mercies.
His lips thinned as memories of Sarajevo crowded in; but Constance was depending on him, so Quinn took a shaky breath and manacled himself. He held out his arms to show the Fae. âI ask you to let the woman go,â he replied, entirely truthfully. âShe has nothing to do with my breaking your law.â
âWhat would I get in return?â she asked, gaze sliding up and down Quinn lasciviously.
He let his voice soften, just a little. âWhat would you ask?â
A shudder of pleasure and the Fae batted her eyes at him, an inner lid shutting a second before her darkly-lashed outer eyelid closed and opened again. âPerhaps a bath for you. Such enticing flesh ought not be hidden beneath so much dirt and clothing.â
Quinnâs gaze drifted over her deliberately. âThat seems a very small price to pay.â
âI did not say that was the price, but negotiations should be conducted civilly,â the Fae replied. âDonât you agree, pretty one?â
âVery well. Here?â Heâd let her watch, if that was all she wanted.
An indulgent laugh. âSuch eagerness. No, in a proper setting.â The Unseelie made a noise and licked her lips as though she was tasting something delicious. She raised a single arched and graceful brow and the door to Quinnâs cell swung open. âCome along, pretty one,â she said, taking a step to the side and gesturing as if she were inviting him to join her for afternoon tea.
He thought he had her measure: she wanted him, yes, but more to the point, she wanted him pliant. He could do pliant, at least for now. Quinn offered her his arm in the same spirit as sheâd beckoned to him. âLead the way.â
The Unseelie led him from the prison and deeper into a labyrinth of corridors that slowly became more refined and opulent. She stopped in front of a glimmering black door that tapered to a point at the top. Here she touched his manacles and the chain that ran from one cuff to the other lengthened and turned from metal to something that looked and felt like silk. âOne of the bathing chambers, pretty one.â
âSo it is,â he agreed, and went inside.
To his surprise, she did not follow him. Instead she lingered on the threshold, watching him as he moved deeper into the room. âThere are perfumed oils, and when youâre finished, appropriate garments will be provided.
